Social Network Functionality Now Available

We have just upgraded the system with our latest set of changes.  There are a number of things of interest, but perhaps the most interesting component of our update is the way we now interact with social networks.

More specifically, for those of you using our extension (which will need to be updated to give you this added functionality), we have added context to social networks including MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, Tagworld, etc.  Now, when browsing these sites, the HUD extension will discover available user profiles and allow you to add your friend's social network profiles to your tabs - you can then even publish your "friends" tab.  In addition to detecting profiles, we also detect photos on many of those sites, as well as photos from Photobucket, Picasa, Flickr, Ofoto and Yahoo photos.

We have also added another mini which we believe will help you in creating published tabs, our Slide Show mini.  With this mini, you can configure a number of photos which will then rotate through.  The photos can be input with direct URLs to publicly accessible images, or you can use the Flickr mini to find images you like, and then drag and drop them out of the Flickr mini and onto the Slide Show mini - give it a try!

Finally, one other update of note, is our addition of scroll bars the the environment.  If you happen to drag a mini off of your visible screen area and/or you use a computer with a lower resolution, you will now be able to use the scroll bars to get to your hidden content.

New Screencast Available - In French

Our friends over at MacOSX86.net, have put together a screencast highlighting the usability and functionality of yourminis.com.  The screencast goes into a good deal of detail, highlighting various minis (calendar, clock, RSS, GMail, Weather, etc.), the creation of tabs (changing backgrounds, moving minis from one tab to another, etc.), multiple tab view and more!

Take a look at the screencast, but please be aware that the voice over is in French.

TechCrunch Review - The yourminis Do-It-All Flash Homepage

Michael Arrington, of the incredibly popular TechCrunch has written up an initial review of yourminis.com.

YourMinis is a Flash-based customizable homepage product that will compete for users with a number of similar products that use Ajax - Netvibes, Pageflakes, Google, Live.com and more. This was launched by a startup called Goowy, which created a flash-based productivity suite (email, calendar, IM, etc.) last year - see here for our Goowy coverage.

yourminis - Widgets and Rich Internet Application

Ryan Stewart has a very thorough and descriptive write up that details the ins and outs of yourminis.

If you track the ever-profound blogosphere, you know that Widgets are the new black. In fact, on Monday there was even an entire conference to talk about the resurgence in Widgets - Widgets Live! The widget obsession is something that baffles me in many ways; I'm not sure I get the business model behind widgets. But there is something powerful about compartmentalizing data and giving it to the user in an efficient way. I see widgets as being very lucrative for an established property that can tie a specific widget back to their core site or application. But these widgets need a platform, and there are a lot of people competing to be that platform. Earlier I talked about Microsoft's Sidebar in Windows Vista as a very compelling option. Another one I like both because of their technological approach and their brand is yourminis.

Firefox/Flock Extension & IE Bookmarklet Available

If you are using Firefox or Flock download the yourminis extension below…

Extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to Firefox or Flock.  They allow you to customize your browser to fit your own needs and preferences.

The yourminis extension allows you to easily access yourminis, while browsing the Internet, by clicking on the yourminis.com logo   in the bottom right of your browser or clicking "Ctrl" and "~" at the same time on your keyboard.   

This will launch yourminis in heads up display (HUD) mode over any page that you are currently on.  yourminis can also interact with the page below the HUD.  For example, if there are RSS feeds on the page, yourminis will detect the feeds and let you simply add them to yourminis with 1 click.  In addition if you are on a page with microformats, MP3 files and more, yourminis will detect the content and give you a notification and additional 1 click options.   

To go back to the page you were viewing, simply click back into the transparent background of the heads up display and yourminis will disappear.  To install this powerful extension, disable your popup blocker for "blog.yourminis.com" and click the install button below:

If you are using Internet Explorer add a bookmarklet below…

A bookmarklet is an advanced bookmark that adds new functionality to your IE browser.   

The yourminis bookmarklet allows you to easily access yourminis, while browsing the Internet.  Clicking on the yourminis bookmarklet will launch yourminis in heads up display (HUD) mode over any page that you are currently on.  yourminis can also interact with the page below the HUD.  For example, if there are RSS feeds on the page, yourminis will detect the feeds and let you simply add them to yourminis with 1 click.  In addition if you are on a page with microformats, MP3 files and more, yourminis will give you additional 1 click options.   

To go back the page you were viewing simply click back into the transparent background of the heads up display and yourminis will disappear.  Try it now by following these instructions:

  1. Open the View|Toolbars browser menu and make sure "Links" is checked.    
  2. Right-click on the "Create bookmarklet" image below and select "Add to Favorites". (Explorer may then inform you that you are adding a bookmark that might not be safe -- this is a normal security message since you adding active content)
  3. You should see a list labeled "Create in:", if not press the "Create in >>" button.    
  4. In the list labeled "Create in:" select the "Links" folder and press "OK". You should see the bookmark at the top of your browser.

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 5K

Alex's wife, Shari, organized a group of people in support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 5K in San Diego this past weekend. 

The goowy team was very proud to be one of the sponsors of this walk and Shari's SD Divas team, as part of the launch of www.yourminis.com.  The SD Divas were able to raise in excess of four thousand dollars in support of this great initiative.

Please donate what you can to furthering research for the cure of breast cancer.

Adobe Site of the Day Awarded to yourminis.com

Although we've barely launched, we have just won Adobe's site of the Day Award for November 6th, 2006.  Adobe recognizes websites based on their use of strong visual designs, superior functionalities, and innovative uses of Adobe products. 

Also, lucky for us, the 6th is a Monday, so we we got to be the Site of the Day over the entire weekend!

yourminis Launches Flash Widget Desktop

Coming from the makers of desktop-based widget app Goowy, is yourminis, which is set to launch on November 6th. Yourminis is the latest entry to the web-based widget desktop space currently lead by Netvibes, Pageflakes, and Protopage. Unlike its competitors which are all AJAX-based, yourminis is built on Flash and this has its own share of advantages all together.
